TikTok Offers The Community Power to Reduce AI-Generated Videos in Their Feeds

TikTok is introducing a fresh option that allows them to reduce the volume of AI-made content appearing in their streams. This initiative comes as the platform revealed that it now features more than 1 thousand million AI videos.

Trial and Implementation

The update is in a pilot phase over the following weeks before a full-scale rollout. This shift comes amid a rise in content created by AI, driven by new video-generation tools.

AI Proliferation Online

It has been noted that nearly 10% of the most rapidly expanding channels on a competing service exclusively feature content made by AI. A considerable share of this output is considered low-quality AI content, a phrase for poor-quality, mass-produced content that is typically illogical or dreamlike.

Our research shows that a lot of users like content produced via AI tools, including computer-generated images to science explainers, and we intend to offer the community the power to adjust the amount of that, depending on their own preferences,” said a spokesperson.

Volume and Proportions

The service shared that there are now 1.3bn videos on its network identified as AI-generated. In total, more than 100 m media items are added to the service each day, making AI content a relatively small percentage of its total content library.

User Control Features

Users will be capable of limit or boost the volume of AI-generated videos they see by accessing the topic control feature in the application and picking AI-made media. Other topics that currently be controlled under the filter cover current affairs, style, cosmetics, and dance.

AI Disclosure Rules

TikTok’s policies oblige users to identify “realistic” AI-made content, and it forbids malicious fake videos of public figures or emergencies. Any believable AI video that is unmarked can be deleted under its terms of service.

Furthermore, the app will from now on attach an “AI-made” label to content produced via its proprietary AI systems, or flagged by an cross-platform project for identifying content made by AI. This step is aimed to deter users from trying to circumvent the tagging system.

Educational Initiatives

TikTok is furthermore launching a $2m AI literacy fund for specialists and institutions to create educational content about responsible artificial intelligence. This project will support non-profit groups dedicated to teaching coding and technology.

Moderation Strategy

TikTok has defended its content review process, following debate over proposals to lay off a large number of content moderators in the United Kingdom. The company is planning to cut hundreds of positions in its user protection department in London, with trade unions and internet security professionals raising concerns that staff are being displaced by machine-led review.

A senior executive clarified that people-led review would remain essential, but artificial intelligence can shield workers by filtering out the most harmful content ahead of it is viewed by people. TikTok reported a 76% decrease in disturbing and violent content seen by human moderators over the previous year due to intervention by its AI tools.

We believe it is crucial to integrate staff and AI to ensure user safety,” the executive stated. “We’ll have people as integral to the approach, but we also think it’s very important to reduce exposure to unsafe media as rapidly, which is where a significant AI assistance is really helping us process content quickly.”
